📄 PRIVACY POLICY

Last updated: January 2026

At Detour, we believe the best travel experiences come from real people and shared knowledge. That trust matters — so we're clear about how your data is used and protected.

Detour is currently operated as a sole trader.

If you have any questions about privacy, contact us at info@detour.global.

1. Who Detour Is For

Detour is for travellers aged 13 and over.

We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.

If you believe this has happened, please contact us and we will delete the data.

2. What Data We Collect

Account & Profile Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Username
  • Password (securely hashed — we never see it)

You may also choose to add:

  • Display name
  • Country of residence
  • Profile and background images
  • A short bio
  • Traveller types (e.g. Backpacker, City Breaker)

All optional.

Content You Create

Detour is built around shared travel content. This may include:

  • Detours (places, descriptions, photos, tags, tips)
  • Journals (travel stories, dates, photos)
  • Location data for places (including latitude and longitude)

These locations describe places, not your real-time movements.

Social & Activity Data

To make Detour work as a community, we collect:

  • Followers and following
  • Saved journals and folders
  • Contributions and edits
  • Notifications and interactions

Technical Data

Like most online services, we also collect:

  • IP address
  • Device and browser information
  • Login sessions and timestamps
  • Secure authentication cookies

This data helps keep Detour secure and reliable.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use your data to:

  • Provide and operate Detour
  • Let you create, share, and discover content
  • Enable social features
  • Secure accounts and prevent misuse
  • Improve performance and reliability

4. Legal Basis for Processing (UK GDPR)

We process personal data based on:

  • Contractual necessity – to provide the service
  • Consent – where you choose to provide optional information
  • Legitimate interests – to operate, protect, and improve Detour
  • Legal obligations – where required by law

5. Location Data

We only collect location data when:

  • You add a detour or place
  • You search for places on the map

We do not:

  • Track real-time user location
  • Collect background location data

6. Cookies

Detour uses essential cookies only.

These cookies:

  • Keep you logged in
  • Protect your account

We do not use advertising, tracking, or marketing cookies.

7. Shared & Community Content (Important)

Some content on Detour becomes shared community content when other users recommend or contribute to it.

If this happens:

  • Your personal profile data can be deleted
  • Your attribution as creator can be removed
  • Photos you personally uploaded can be removed by you
  • The remaining detour content may be kept in a non-identifiable form

This allows Detour to preserve valuable shared travel information while respecting your privacy.

This processing is based on Detour's legitimate interest in maintaining the integrity of community content.

8. Sharing Your Data

We do not sell your personal data.

Some trusted service providers (such as hosting, authentication, and image storage providers) process data on our behalf to run Detour.

Some data may be processed outside the UK or EEA with appropriate safeguards in place.

9. How Long We Keep Data

  • Account data is kept until you delete your account
  • Content remains until you remove it, unless it has become shared community content
  • Some data may be kept temporarily for security or legal reasons

10. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your data
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Delete your personal data
  • Object to processing
  • Request a copy of your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time

To exercise these rights, email info@detour.global.

You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

11. Security

We use reasonable security measures including:

  • Encrypted connections
  • Secure authentication
  • Access controls

No system is perfect, but we take security seriously.

12. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time.

Using Detour means you accept the latest version.

📄 TERMS & CONDITIONS

Last updated: January 2026

Welcome to Detour — a place to share and discover places worth the detour.

By using Detour, you agree to these Terms.

1. Eligibility

You must be 13 years old or over to use Detour.

If you are under 18, you confirm you have permission from a parent or legal guardian.

2. Your Account

You are responsible for:

  • Keeping your login details secure
  • Using Detour responsibly
  • Ensuring content you post is accurate to the best of your knowledge

3. Your Content & Licence

You own the content you create.

By posting content on Detour, you grant Detour a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, host, display, and share your content for the purpose of:

  • Operating the service
  • Improving the platform
  • Featuring content in Detour marketing and promotion

This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except where content has become shared community content or must be retained for legal reasons.

4. Community Detours & Shared Content

Some detours become shared community entries when other users recommend them or contribute to them.

To avoid the loss of valuable shared travel information:

  • Detours that have received recommendations or contributions from other users cannot be fully deleted by the original creator
  • Instead, creators may remove their attribution, so the detour no longer shows them as the creator
  • Creators may remove any photos they personally uploaded before deleting their account

When an account is deleted:

  • The user's profile and personal data are removed
  • Attribution to detours they created is removed
  • Shared detours remain available for the community

There is currently no option to delete all historical activity where content has become shared or relied upon by others.

5. Public Content

Some content on Detour is public by default.

You are responsible for what you choose to share.

6. Prohibited Use

You must not:

  • Post illegal, harmful, or misleading content
  • Infringe intellectual property rights
  • Harass or abuse others
  • Attempt to disrupt or exploit the platform

7. Moderation

To keep Detour useful and welcoming, we may:

  • Remove or edit content
  • Suspend or terminate accounts

This may happen without notice where necessary.

8. Travel Disclaimer

Detour contains user-generated travel information.

We do not guarantee accuracy, safety, availability, or suitability of places listed.

You use information from Detour at your own risk.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Detour is provided "as is"
  • We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses

10. Termination

You may stop using Detour at any time.

We may suspend or terminate access if these Terms are breached.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
